Objective:  Students will explore Emotional Intelligence and work in teams to identify how different responses fit in to the EI matrix.  Students will work in teams to determine an appropriate response to different scenarios requiring the use of Emotional Intelligence.

Presentation1Bradley is a brand new employee at a sporting goods store. He doesn’t know that much about the inventory, but he is doing his best to learn. One day, an angry customer comes in, walks up to Bradley, and begins to loudly complain about the quality of the items he has just purchased. The customer is so angry that he is actually rude to Bradley. Before long, Bradley becomes angry himself and is tempted to yell back at the customer.

What would you do?  Record your response in your Google Docs Journal.

Discuss your response with the person sitting across from you.  How was your partner’s response similar or different from yours?  Record the similarities and differences in your Google Docs journal.

Objective: Students will use their MS Word 2013 skills to create  original Halloween cards by reading and following the instructions found in Word It! Activity 46 p. 107.

Assignment:  Read and follow the instructions found in Word It! Activity 46 p. 107 to create an original Halloween card to share with the Trick-or-treaters tonight at Trick-or-Treat Street.   Please make your card appropriate for young children by minimizing the amount of gore.  Add a Halloween poem to the inside of your card.

Be sure to follow the layout instructions on p. 107 and put your name on the back panel. 

Before you print check to see if you have rotated the correct panels 180 degrees so that they are upside down. 

This assignment is due at the end of the period. 

Be sure to put your name and period on the back panel. When you have a card that works, print five (5) copies, fold your cards, and turn them in.

October 22 & 23, 2015 Conflict Management

Do Now:  Respond in your Google Docs Journal

  1. Describe a time when you experienced a conflict with someone else.
  2. Was it over something tangible or a difference of opinion?
  3. How was it resolved?

Objective:  Students will begin to explore Emotional Intelligence by reading and discussing sources of conflict and how to resolve them.

Group Work:

If you have the Heart, make a copy of this Google Doc and share it with your team members so that you all can work from it.

Directions:

  • Working It Out:  in teams, determine which of the terms or phrases best matches the situations provided.
  • When you are finished, ask your instructor for a copy of the answer guide.
  • Conflicting Reporters: Read and discuss the story about the two reporters in your team and answer the questions on page 2 of the Google Docs.
  • Read All About It: In your groups, access a local or national news website to find an article that addresses conflict.
  • Use the Google Docs p. 3  as a guide to discuss the steps of conflict resolution.
  • Report your findings to the class.

September 9, 2016 SOW & WBS

Do Now:  Respond in your Google Docs Journal to the following:

  1. Identify two resources you will need to implement your team’s management project.
  2. Identify where your team will acquire the needed resources and if there is a concern about the availability of each one.
  3. Are there any needed resources that your team has identified that are not readily available to you?

Objective:  Students will complete their SOW and WBS and compile a list of needed resources, estimates of time and cost and sources using the Google Sheets templates.

Assignment:  Working in your teams, complete the SOW and WBS for your team’s project.  Compile a list of resources, estimate the cost in time and dollars, and identify potential sources for each resource.  Link all of your documents in your Google Docs Journal.

October 16 & 21, 2015 e-Mail & FBLA Prep

Do Now

Using what you learned about verbal communication, formal letters and e-mail etiquette, compose an e-mail to your parents inviting them to attend Parent Teacher Conferences on October 20 or October 27, 2015 from 4:00 until 7:00pm.  Parents and students will be able to meet with teachers in the gym and cafeteria.  Share your schedule in your e-mail including the class and teacher name.  When you address your e-mail please cc: me at robert_polete@dpsk12.net.  If your parents do not have an e-mail address you can write them a formal letter and link it to your Google Docs journal.

Objective:  Students will compose an e-mail or formal letter inviting their parents to attend Parent Teacher Conferences.  Students will declare their intention to formally join FBLA and choose a test and performance competitive event.

  1. Identify two non-verbal tips that every speaker should follow when giving a presentation.
  2. What is an example of a “filler word?”  How can you work to avoid using these in your presentation?
  3. How do you feel when you are asked to give an oral presentation to the class?

Objective:  Students will deliver the oral presentation they have prepared based on the homework reading.  Students will present in small groups and critique the other members of their group.

30 minutes to complete the Do Now and prepare for your presentation.

30 minutes in teams of four to present and critique each of the presentations.

October 6 & 7, 2015 Effective Communication

Do Now: In your journal respond to the following question using complete sentences:

  1. Compare and contrast verbal and non-verbal communication.  Include examples of when you would use both.
  2. Give three examples of a gesture.
  3. How do you use gestures to communicate? Give at least two examples.

Objective: Through active listening and reading, students will distinguish between different types of communication and understand the importance of communication at home, school and in the community. Students will also understand the what constitutes effective communication, barriers to communication, and the ways to overcome them. Students will demonstrate this understanding by reading More Than Just Talk, group discussion and  writing in their Journal.

Objective: Students will demonstrate what they know about the 10 Leadership Characteristics and 8 Leadership Theories by taking a quiz using Quizstar.  Students will learn how to insert symbols and clip art into a Google Docs document using the Word It activity book and Google Docs.

Assignment:  When you have completed the quiz two times, complete Activity 6 Symbols on page 11 of the Word It! book.

Symbols are special characters that do not appear as keys on your keyboard.  To insert a symbol using Google Docs, click on the Insert tab and choose Special Characters.  Using the Key Word search bar type in the letters in the symbol you are looking for or a description of the symbol like “smiley face.”  Below is a list of the symbols you will be using:
