A&M Records, part of Universal Music Group, a heavy hitter in the music industry, as well as several other record companies affiliated with the Recording Industry Association of America slapped Napster with a lawsuit. Objective:  Students will explore strategies and systems needed to access, process, and evaluate how statistical data can be used to make management decisions by collecting data and applying measures of central tendency. Students will work in their collaborative project teams to complete their project plan presentation.  Students will oraly present their project plans to the class.

The Hat Shop

Supplies Needed: Several tape measures, Google Sheets

As entrepreneurs, your class has decided to open a store that sells hats. This scenario will serve as the backdrop for learning how to interpret statistics to make basic business decisions.

The hats that you have chosen to sell are not adjustable. Since the retail space of your store is limited, you will need to carefully select which hat sizes you should stock. To do this, you will assume that the students in the class represent a general population. Measure each others’ heads and record that information (to the nearest ¼”) in a spreadsheet.  Use this Hat Shop Data template to record your data.

Measures of Central Tendency

Mode = The most frequent measure

Median = The middle measure

Mean = The average (add all of the measures and divide by the total number)

Frequency = The number of times a measure occures

Percentage = parts per 100

Range = The difference between the maximum and minimum measure

Standard Deviation = a measure of how far the data is from the mean.

Variance = a measue of how far the data is from the mean.

Based on the data collected which of these stastical measures will help the Hat Shop managers stock the sizes that will be needed?

When doing research and using the web, there are some criteria that should be used before including a site into your work: Source, Purpose and Content

  1. Source
    • Identify the person or group responsible for the site
    • Identify the person’s credentials or group’s contact information.
  2. Purpose
    • Identify if the purpose of the site is to inform, persuade, sell or entertain
  3. Content
    • Is the site updated
    •  Is information is presented with a bias or commercial intent.
    • Is information free of errors and professionally presented.

In your teams list as many categories of information sources that you can in 3 minutes.

What type of source would you go to get current information about something “in the news?”

What type of source would you go to get historical information from an expert?

What type of source would you go to learn about recent research in micro-biology?

Take 8 minutes in your teams to identify sources for the topics on the handout.  Decide what type of source is appropriate for the topic and find examples on the internet.

How can you determine what kind of publication it is?
