April 29 & May 2, 2016 Excel It Activity 12 Payroll

Do Now: Respond in your Google Docs Journal

  1. What is a payroll deduction?
  2. Why do employers deduct money from employees paychecks?

Objective: Students completed Excel It! Activity 10, 11 and 5.  They continues exploring how to use formulas in Excel by completing Excel It!  Activity 12. Click here for Activity 12 Instructions.

Reminder: You can create formulas using cell references by clicking in the cell where you want the result to be displayed, start your formula with an equal sign =, click on the cell you want to reference in your formula, enter the math operator (+, -, *, /)and enter a number or click on another cell to reference in your formula.

Assignment:  Complete Activity 12 in the Excel It! book.   Use this excel spreadsheet to begin Excel It Activity 12 Start File  You must enter lines 2-11 and 28-32.  This assignment is due at the end of the period.

April 28 & 29, 2016 Excel It Activity 5

Do Now: Respond in your Google Classroom

  1. What symbol is used to start every mathematical formula in a spreadsheet?
  2. What three functions did you use to analyze the data at the bottom of the spreadsheet in  Activity 11?
  3. What field did you sort by to alphabetize the list in Activity 10
  4. What order did you sort the Total column by in Activity 11 to arrange the scores in descending order (A to Z or Z to A)?

Objective: Students will read and follow directions to complete Excel It! Activity 5.  They will practice creating spreadsheet entries and sorting a table of data to arrange it in alphabetical order.

Classwork:

  1. Complete Excel It! Activity 10 and 11 from last week and link them to your Google Classroom.
  2. Complete Excel It! Activity 5.

Students learn that in the current workforce, people change jobs or careers several times over a lifetime. That means it is important to be prepared and adaptable. Students explore which of their priorities should be their anchors as they prepare to enter the working world.

 

April 21 & 22, 2015 Mock Interviews

Objective:  Students will practice a job interview today with volunteers from the community.

You will be graded on your interview skills by the volunteers interviewing you.  They will fill out this  Mock Interview Rubric it is worth 120 points.  Read over the expectations and devise a strategy to achieve the maximum points in each category.

Be sure to get the name of the person interviewing you so you can write a thank you note after the interview. (This is worth 10 points of the total grade)

Following your interview you will complete a self-evaluation of your interview using this same form(yellow paper) (this is 10 points of the total grade.)

Assignment:

  1. Prepare for Mock Interviews by finalizing and printing 2 copies of your resume.
  2. Research one of these Job Ads to learn about the company in preparation for your interview.
  3. Review the Mock Interview Evaluation form to determine what you need to do during the interview.
  4. Review the Mock Interview Questions and prepare an answer for them. Turn this in before your interview.
  5. Write a thank you note to your interviewer after your interview. (This is worth 10 points of the total grade)
  6. Complete the interview self evaluation. (yellow sheet)(This is worth 10 points of the total grade)
  7. Work on missing assignments.

Get Hired: Strong Soft Skills

Students will review soft skills that are in demand by employers and rate their own soft skills. They will use personal stories in a job-interview workshop to communicate these skills to a potential employer.

Mock Interview Practice

In groups of 2 practice the interview skills we have been discussing

Round 1

  1. Choose who will be the interviewer and who will be interviewed.
  2. The person being interviewed will shake hands and introduce themselves by saying “Hello my name is__________.”
  3. The interviewer will ask which job the interview is for.
  4. The person being interviewed will identify which of the three jobs they are interested in.
  5. The interviewer will ask 3 or 4 questions and listen to the responses.
  6. The person being interviewed will ask 1 or 2 questions about the job.
  7. Shake hand and say good by

Round 2 switch places and repeat steps 1-7 above.

Print 2 copies of your Resume and Cover Letter for next class.  Be sure to sign your Cover Letter in blue or black ink.

Homework:  Practice your answers to the common interview questions in the mirror and with a friend or family member.

Come to the next class ready for Mock Interviews, dressed appropriately, research the company you are interviewing for and prepared to answer the common interview questions.

 

 

April 14 & 15, 2016 Interview Tips, Job Skills Part 3

Do Now: Respond to the following in  a Google Doc attached to the Google Classroom assignment.  Write your response in a paragraph following the outline for 6 Trait Writing a Response.  Be sure to use correct spelling, punctuation and capitalization.

  1. Describe two interview tips and how they will help you in an interview.
  2. What part of an interview do you think will be the most difficult?
  3. What part of an interview do you think will be the easiest?

Objective:  Students will explore what to expect in a job interview and how to respond to interview questions by using the STAR method to formulate a response to open-ended questions, evaluating a job description to identify the key skills required and developing answers to commonly asked interview questions.

April 12 & 13 Excel It Activity 10 & 11

Do Now: Respond Google Classroom in the form of a paragraph with a topic sentence, responses to the questions and a concluding sentence.  Be sure to use correct spelling, capitalization and punctuation.

  1. What is a spreadsheet used for?
  2. How have you used a spreadsheet in the past?
  3. When do you think you might use a spreadsheet in the future?

Objective: Students will read to follow directions in the Excel It!  Activity 10 and 11 to learn how to enter mathematical formula in a spreadsheet and to alphabetize and sort numerical data.

Assignment:  Complete Activities 10 & 11 in Excel It!  This is due at the end of the period on Friday April 15, 2016.

Excel It! Activity 10 Instructions

Use this Excel It Activity 10 Start File to begin Activity 10.  Make a copy that you can edit.  You will need to enter the title, headings and the last two rows of data.  Follow these directions  to correctly format the spreadsheet and enter formulas.  Turn in your finished spreadsheet to the Google Classroom Assignment.

Excel It! Activity 11 Instructions

Use your  finished spreadsheet from Activity 10 to begin Activity 11.  Use the File>Make a Copy command to rename your spreadsheet SAT SCORES 2.  Follow these directions  to  add additional  formulas and sort the data.  Link your finished spreadsheet to the Google Classroom Assignment.

April 7 & 8, 2016 Cover Letter

A resume cover letter is an introduction of your skills and experiences to a prospective hiring manager.  The purpose is to personalize your resume and to highlight the items that are a good fit for the job your are applying to.

Objective: Students will learn how to write and revise a cover letter for their resume demonstrating proper business vocabulary and business letter formatting using:

  • examples of cover letters
  • cover letter graphic organizer
  • Word It! Activity 24 p. 54
  • partner feedback
  • Cover Letter rubric
  • Google Docs spelling and grammar check

  2. Read the GRPI High-Performance Team Criteria and have each team member initial the “Before the Build” column.
  3. Plan how your team will win the challenge using all of the tools you have learned in this program so far.
  4. Build a structure.

After the Build

  1. When stop is called, score your structure as a group.  Use the Team Challenge Scoring Guide to ensure all requirements are met.
  2. Rate your team using the GRPI High-Performance Team Criteria.
  3. Protect your structure through the judging process.

Log on to Google Classroom and complete the reflection in the assignment.
